Joy in the true sense only comes from God. We can not create lasting joy as humans. I lived on temporary joy for a few decades. The happiness I was trying to create for myself would work for a short while. It was temporary. I had to refill it every time I needed more.
When I was pre-teen I lived in Florida near Disney World and the other theme parks that were around International Avenue at the time. I was very lucky to have a friend at church that was a live character artist. She was a painter. I could just drop her name at the gate and I was in. The first time I felt like a KING! I was the 11 year old Boss that gets into Disney for free. Oh, and Water World.
I had every kid's dream. Disney one day, Water World the next, rinse repeat. It did not take long for me to get tired of both. The joy wore off quickly. I wanted more than that. How could I get more out of the world as a child? I had everything I wanted. It was not doin it for me anymore.
It was like a drug to me. Drugs and Alcohol give us a joy that leads to pain, always. In Alcoholics Anonymous we have a saying many may have heard, "One is too many and a thousand is never enough." The fun don't work no more.
The same went for me as an adult. I played the adult games chasing happiness though my emotions. It stopped working almost as soon as I started. Why did I not stop? I did not have that peace that passes all understanding. I did not have real Joy that only Jesus can give me. Christians know our joy is real.
I have been given a Joy that can not be taken away nor does it wear out. It is given to me as soon as I ask for it and listen to the Word. By submitting and giving up everything I have been given even more. the gifts of the spirit are amazing if I stay in the Light with prayer, reading the word, and doing what Jesus would do on the daily.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the Joy you have given us. The Joy that will never fade. Help us to not get distracted by the things of this world. Let our hearts be aligned with you so our lights will shine bright in this dark place. I pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
