When I was younger, I had no idea what love was. Like many young men, I thought love was something physical. If it gave me fuzzy feelings, then it must have been love, or so I thought. I chased it all my life without understanding what I was seeking. I was too wrapped up in myself to even grasp what love truly was.
We all hear this constantly. Everyone has heard the phrase "what is love" (insert any Night at the Roxbury meme). Well, what is love? I know what it isn't. I've figured that part out, but I still needed to understand what it truly is.
I attended Christian schools for most of my grade school education. We had to memorize various verses and chapters from the Bible. I can barely remember them fully today. One memorization was the entire chapter of 1 Corinthians 13, which we call the love chapter.
Love is patient, love is kind; it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. The chapter elaborates on what love is. As a young boy, I repeated these verses hundreds of times but couldn't understand the lesson they were teaching. They were just words to me.
Here I am, 40 years later, and I finally understand what Paul was conveying. Love is not hate, nor is it selfish. This realization came after many years of hard, painful lessons. Now, free from my self-centeredness, I understand what love is. I cannot truly love without Christ's influence on me. I cannot love on my own; I am a selfish sinner by nature.
Has God shown you what love truly is? God's love is immutable; it cannot be copied or faked in any way. True love only comes from God and nowhere else. I cannot generate true love from my own hardened heart; I need Jesus.
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for showing us true love, which is stronger than death. Help us to stay in the Spirit so that your love will flow out of us to reach the lost. I pray this in Jesus' name, Amen. Thank you everyone for being here. I love all you guys. WWJD For Life! 🥰
